The initiatives implemented by the Italian Cooperation in Lebanon aim to strengthen food security and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Efforts have focused on enhancing strategic agri-food value chains, particularly olive oil, fruit trees, and spices, by supporting quality improvement, processing, and export capacity.
Following the crisis between Russia and Ukraine, which highlighted Lebanon’s heavy reliance on cereal imports, AICS launched interventions to multiply high-quality cereal and legume seeds, thereby contributing to the reinforcement of local self-sufficiency.
Special attention is also given to the small and medium-scale agro-industrial sector, through actions that improve management, infrastructure, energy efficiency, and environmental sustainability, thereby encouraging resilience and competitiveness.
Recent regional tensions have aggravated the vulnerabilities of Lebanon’s agricultural and food systems, creating new intervention priorities. The Italian Cooperation seeks to strengthen local response capacity by promoting more resilient production models, sustainable resource management, and initiatives aimed at reducing food waste along the value chains, to ensure greater food security and economic inclusion.
